Synchronous engines

Synchronous engines are electric equipments on which the speed of the rotor is equal to the speed of the rotating magnetic field, regardless of engine's load. The synchronous engines are used to power small, medium and large electric drives, up to tens of MW. They can be single phase, three phases or step by step

Synchronous engines are electric equipments on which the speed of the rotor is equal to the speed of the rotating magnetic field, regardless of engine's load. The synchronous engines are used to power small, medium and large electric drives, up to tens of MW. They can be single phase, three phases or step by step.

The single phase synchronous engine is usually done as reactive synchronous engine, with or without permanent magnets on the rotor. It requires a rotating magnetic field that can be obtained either by using an auxiliary phase and capacitor, or by using a spiral in the short stator poles. Generally, they are used in low power electric drives, such as recording and playback of sound and image systems.

The three phase synchronous engine is an electric equipment on which the speed of the rotor is equal to the speed of the rotating magnetic field speed, regardless of engine's load. It is generally used in high and very high power electric drives.

The step by step engine is a type of synchronous motor with apparent poles on both valves. The occurrence of a control signal on one of the poles of the stator, the rotor will move until its poles will line up in the right opposite stator poles. This type of rotor rotation will be, practically, made from pole to pole. The step by step engines are used where high precision is needed (hard disk, copyers etc).

There are three main methods of starting the synchronous motors:

  • Starting in asynchronous
  • Starting at variable frequency
  • Starting with an auxiliary motor
